Anxiety

Worrying is part of human nature.

We spend so much of our energy thinking about what happened yesterday or what’s coming tomorrow.  Even when performing tasks or trying to relax, some of us are already planning what’s next, stewing “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios.

Sometimes we can manage our nerves, put out the fires, and carry on with our days.  Yet, other times, these thoughts act like unwanted intruders, following us everywhere we go and leaving very little room to enjoy our lives.

Anxiety may already be your long-lasting companion.  It may also show up along a significant challenge or come out of nowhere, paralyzing you without warning.

Regardless of what brought it to your door, persistent and severe anxiety can affect how you work, study, play and interact with others.  These intrusive thoughts and emotions can also manifest in your body, making it difficult to function properly.

We recognize how hard it is to struggle with anxiety because we have been there.  But we also know you have the ability to adapt and grow.

Here at Counseling to Inspire, we offer therapy for anxiety to help you embrace your strengths and provide the tools you need to inspire change in your life.  If you or a loved one are struggling with anxiety, we can help.

Contact us if you have any questions or schedule a free phone consultation to get started.

Anxiety isn’t a weakness.

Living with anxiety, turning up and doing things with anxiety takes a strength most will never know.

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is the natural reaction to any situation that feels scary, dangerous, or presents a cause for concern.   We may feel occasional anxiety before going to the doctor, during a performance review, or a competition.  For some people, anxiety may come and go during these and other instances without causing major problems.

Now, when anxiety is excessive, recurring, or does not go away, it may interfere with your daily life.  You might have a hard time focusing, doing your job, or socializing.  Basic vital activities like sleeping or eating can seem impossible to conquer.

What Causes Anxiety?

Anxiety can be a result of a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors.

Some of the common risk factors associated with anxiety include:

  • Having a family or personal history of anxiety or other mental health problems

  • Having underlying medical conditions or illnesses (e.g., heart disease, respiratory disorders, chronic pain)

  • Suffering from trauma or witnessing a disturbing experience during childhood or adulthood (e.g., loss of a loved one, accident)

  • Undergoing high-stress levels after a specific situation or a series of stressful events

How Do I Know if I’m Suffering From Anxiety?

We all experience anxiety from time to time.  As long as the anxiety feels manageable and temporary, then that is a normal part of living.

However, if the anxiety is intense, persistent, or uncontrollable, professional help is warranted.  When left unaddressed, anxiety can impact your health, your relationships, and your outlook on life.

Common examples of symptoms of harmful anxiety include:

  • Excessive worry or fear

  • Feeling restless, tense, or uneasy

  • Irritability or mood changes

  • Nervousness or panic

  • Sensing impending danger

  • Fatigue and difficulty focusing

  • Palpitations or racing heart

  • Shaking and sweating

  • Shortness of breath or breathing rapidly

  • Sleep problems

If you, or anyone you love exhibit some of these signs, we recommend seeking professional support.

Therapy for anxiety can help you address anxiety symptoms to welcome ease, confidence, and peace of mind.

How Can Therapy Help With Anxiety?

1) Therapy Provides Insight

Therapy offers an open environment to dive deep into your anxiety, where it comes from, and how it affects your life.  You will gain insight into your symptoms, what could trigger them, and how they may show up in your body.  This self-awareness allows you to connect the dots and answer some of the questions that might add frustration or prevent you from healing.

2) Therapy Helps You Address Symptoms of Anxiety

Therapy can not only support you in understanding your symptoms but in addressing them.  Thanks to their evidence-based knowledge, your therapist will be able to listen, assess, note your behavior and thought processes, and prepare a plan.  The idea is to customize treatment to your specific needs to help you manage those signs when they arise.

3) Therapy Empowers You With Tools

Therapy also helps you reconnect with your capabilities and empowers you with coping mechanisms to carry outside your therapist’s room.  That way, when anxiety comes knocking, you can recognize it and leverage your toolbox to handle it.  Therapy will equip you to use what works for you when navigating future challenges.
